The Future of National CyberWatch Work

The National CyberWatch Center will continue to pursue initiatives that impact  cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development while maintaining support for and growing its network of educators, students, industry leaders, and government organizations that support technical education in the U.S. 

The following strategic programs and services provide a sample roadmap for future work: programs, services, and partnerships to attract diverse populations; apprenticeship programs; educational, training, and assessment standards; evidence-based practices for model curriculum development; competency-based mastery learning curriculum; and new certificate programs.

Cyber Analyst Challenge & Conference
The NCAC 2018 conference features national academic and industry experts discussing cyber risk analysis, threat identification, remediation/communication, and defense. Topics also center around opportunities and security threats, as well as the sharing of educational/research best practices and exemplars. Students and faculty can engage and learn from leading practitioners, access the latest tools/techniques, interact with the brightest students in the nation, and receive scholarships.

No/Low Tech Knowledge and Skills Required in the Workplace
Join Casey W. O’Brien, executive director for the National CyberWatch Center, as he presents a webcast on no/low technology knowledge and skills that are not being taught in schools (such as time management, introductions, calendar invites, productivity apps, and more) but will make an impact in the workplace. This session is on Thursday, April 19, 2 p.m. ET.

National CyberWatch Member
Roughly 500 people learned key lessons at the third annual CyberCon held at National CyberWatch member school, San Juan College. The event, attended by adults as well as middle and high school students, addressed how to manage risks in personal and professional accounts, preventing cybersecurity breaches and hardening ones’ identity online. Sessions and speakers also addressed various cyber topics.

Power Lunch With Dr. Barbara Belón
Join Dr. Barbara Belón, director of National CyberWatch membership, for a weekly power lunch as she gives participants a brief rundown of National CyberWatch membership options. Starting at 1:15pm ET on April 12 and running every Thursday in April, Dr. Belón will discuss “What did National CyberWatch identify as a problem, and how does membership solve this."

FS-ISAC: Building Cybersecurity Diversity Scholarship
Female students enrolled in an educational or training program and interested in a career in cybersecurity have a scholarship opportunity from Financial Services-Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC). Students must be 21, authorized to work in the U.S., enrolled in an educational program, and able to attend the FS-ISAC Fall Summit. Sponsoring organizations include Bank of America, Microsoft, J.P. Morgan, Standard Charter, Anomali, BNP Parribas, and Bank of NY Mellon. Apply by April 15.

National Cyber Defense Competition
The University of Virginia (UVA) is headed to the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in Orlando, Florida this month. The student group from UVA competed for the first time in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (MACCDC), March 16-17, at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. They bested the defending national championship team from University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Not only is UVA headed to Florida, they also are a National CyberWatch member and sponsor of the MACCDC.

"I am happy to inform you that our college was approved to offer the AAS degree in Cybersecurity and certificates also. We changed our program name and updated our courses to reflect changes in the area of Cybersecurity. Also, we used CyberWatch curriculum to help us in the process. Hope to see you at the next community college conference."
